💥 RESISTED SPRINT TRAINING 💥 While typical acceleration and sprint training is the most direct way to improve sprinting speed, most athletes will eventually reach a point when their program needs to change. Strength and power exercises may make for useful additions, but weight room work is always general in nature. To break through plateaus and truly enhance one’s ability to accelerate and sprint fast, athletes should use resisted sprints, resisted bounds, and resisted drills in their sprint training program. Resisted Sprint Training Can: 1. Improve effectiveness of horizontal force application. 2. Train the determinants of 100 meter sprinting performance. 3. Train the glutei in a sprint specific manner. Part of my throwing/wrestling based conditioning the other day...This was a quick run through since I forgot to record. Instead of 10reps each exercise as shown in the vid(with barbell), I did 50 reps each fast as possible and 10 sprawls + tosses with the 50lb ball = 1 round. We use yoga push-ups a lot in our training programs, but one challenge with incorporating them over the long-term with more advanced athletes is that they're hard to load up. You can't use bands or chains as external resistance because they slide over the course of the set. And, weight vests really can't provide enough external resistance without getting too bulky and cumbersome. Want to blast your arms & legs simultaneously? Try this eccentric isometric single leg squat & curl combo.  In fact this might be one of the first times I can remember where my arms & legs literally gave out at the same time as the level of intramuscular tension to all the working extremities was enormous. As many of you know I’m an advocate of improving body mechanics, technique, & muscle function.  The best way to do this is by performing the basic foundational movement patterns (of which the squat is one of the key ones) consistently & frequently.  In my advanced clients perform all of the basic movement patterns 6-7x per week.  With that said, it can be tricky finding enough time & recovery recourses to train all of the big movement patterns frequently while also periodically incorporating isolation movements such as curls, shoulder raises, tricep moves, & more. This is where I like to combine foundational movement patterns such as the lunge, squat, and hinge with other upper body isolation movements as it essentially kills 2 birds with 1 stone. Additionally there are 4 other benefits of this exercise. 1. Holding an eccentric isometric squat forces the lifter to use smooth & controlled curling mechanics as excessive momentum, cheating, or swinging, will cause the lifter to loose his or her balance. Simply put, even lighter loads crush the biceps. 2. The slight forward lean creates constant tension in the biceps throughout the motion particularly in the contracted position of the curl thereby eliciting high levels of intramuscular tension & cellular swelling. 3. The torso angle produced from the squat allows the dumbbells to move through a larger range of motion than normal. Besides activating more motor units this large ROM creates greater mechanical tension & muscle damage which maximizes hypertrophy. 4. Besides blasting the legs & upper body, this also acts as a therapeutic mobility exercise for the lower body as eccentric isometrics are one of the most therapeutic protocols there is for improving muscle function, joint health, & body mechanics. With that said my massive book on eccentric isometrics will be out in 3 days Monday December 17th!!

☆ M O B I L I T Y ☆ Another great workshop today in FLYEfit. 🙌🏼 Today we were learning all about mobility. Poor mobility of a person’s joints can restrict their ability to perform a whole range of exercises. Poor ankle mobility can really hinder a person’s capacity to execute compound lifts, such as the squat or deadlift, with correct form and technique. This in turn will inhibit a person from progressing within these exercises and will most likely lead to injury if not addressed. Try this test to see how you fair out. Place the right foot about a fist and a thumb distance away from the wall. The thigh of the left leg should be perpendicular to the floor. Reach the knee of the right leg towards the wall. The heel of the right foot must remain planted on the floor. If you can touch the wall with your knee (without the heel lifting) then you can rest easy that your ankle mobility is pretty good. If not then it might be time to start introducing some mobility exercises into your daily routine. Probably best to do this against a strictly flat wall, i.e. one without skirting board like I’m using here. 😅 Happy testing! 🤗

Recovery 🙌🏼 . Recovery is absolutely essential for gaining muscle 💪🏼 . As previously mentioned, it is during the times of rest and recovery that our muscles repair and grow from the damage caused during exercise! . 😴 Sleep plays such an important role in this process as it is the time that we should be truly at rest. Aim to get a minimum of 6-7 hours per night of good quality sleep . This not only helps you feel more energised but reduces stress! And stress is one of the worst things for muscle growth due to its effects on hormones, in particular lowering testosterone and increasing cortisol . 🥩🥜Getting adequate protein is also incredibly important when building or retaining muscle as this is the source your body requires to repair and maintain broken down tissue! . And the calorie equation crops up again! As you should know by now, creating a calorie surplus (eating more calories than you burn off) will result in growth, simply speaking! 💪🏼 . So if you are looking to gain some mass, make sure you know what you are eating and how to monitor and adjust accordingly to maximise your progression! . It is a similar, if not more important, situation if you are looking to lose fat. Being in a calorie deficit (eating less than you are expending) means that you have to ensure that your recovery is prioritised to prevent burning out! 🤯 . Protein also plays an even bigger role here too as you want to fuel your body with protein to build and retain muscle mass! . As ever, my inbox is open for all queries! . . . . .

Haven’t done a progress update in a month since I’ve messed with my macros and started eating carbs full time. Took these pictures this AM, no pump, completely fasted. Over the past month I’ve actually lost even more weight (not intended) but my overall caloric intake has been the same since the end of October. I’m positive that it has a lot to do with working a second job training more clients at the gym than normal (activity level is higher throughout the day). Still holding most of the body fat in my quads but the tear drops are starting to come in! Christmas and New Years are right around the corner. A new year to become the new YOU. 85 lbs. is NOT 85 lbs. _ Working out in a gym all the time, it’s easy to forget: gyms (studios, classes, bootcamps, etc.) are lab environments. They are defined spaces where most of the stimuli your body and mind are subjected to are controlled for: climate, visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile. Equipment and spaces also have instructions for proper use: not just to ensure safety, but because implements are create with a specific use in mind; and most trainers obliviously insist that is how they “ought” to be used. _ But, the world you live in and are - seemingly - training to more ably interact with is not this closed system. Controls do not always apply; and they don’t always stick when this open system comes under stress. _ Unpredictable things occur; and if you haven’t trained to apply your strength, power, agility or speed nimbly, then your workouts are 1) merely making you good at performing the skill of “performing X exercise/drill/movement in the gym” and 2) actually fostering fragility, not resilience for all you encounter in the real world. 85 lbs. in the gym may behave very differently outside the comfortable box in which you train. _ Remember that next time it’s a little too cold, or a little too humid, or a bit too crowded, or the playlist isn’t quite right for you, or you forget your $130 wireless earbuds, or the equipment you “need” isn’t available, or you have to work in, or you’re disproportionately annoyed because you looked over to find someone is “doing it wrong”. Today was one of those days where I wasn’t amped up to lift, but I managed to prove to myself how important it is push through those feelings of apprehension, laziness, and comfort! If you let any of those get to you, it will for sure eat you alive. Feeling MUCH better after ripping through this workout. - 10 sets of squats, reverse ladder (10 reps-1 rep) Had a lot of fun with these. I broke it up: - SSB Squats (to a box) @ 225 (65 lb bar) for 10,8,6,4,2 reps - Belt Squats @ 140 for 9,7,5,3,1 reps - finished with some back work, and shoulders and arm!

No cables? No problem!⁣ -⁣ Here’s a variation of flys using resistance bands. Barbell Squat Jumps (135lbs)⁣ -⁣ Just added this to my vert training routine.⁣ -⁣ This workout really puts an emphasis on generating force as fast as you can. It also allows me to really work on hip extension which is crucial in jumping higher.⁣ -⁣ I usually do not go deep with this squat. Slam Balls and Kettlebell Swings!!! (Leg day warm-up)⁣⁣⁣ -⁣⁣⁣ Love doing these to warm-up during leg/vert days. If you didn’t know my leg days consist of a lot of strength workouts and plyometrics.⁣⁣⁣ -⁣⁣⁣ These exercises are really great with engaging your whole body.⁣⁣⁣ -⁣⁣⁣ Slam balls allow me to engage my core and also generate power and speed.⁣⁣⁣ -⁣⁣⁣ Kettlebells allow me to activate my posterior chain which is vital for jumping.
